Pipe Stress Engineer - Petrochemical in Houston, TX

Description Leads piping engineering design activities for major scale EPC projects in oil refinery, hydrocarbon, and chemical industrial facilities. Responsible for providing piping engineering deliverables for the project in front end, detailed design, and construction phases. Leads a team of piping engineers and interfaces with piping designers in the execution of design, and interfaces with a multi-discipline project team consisting of project manager, controls, estimating, and engineering disciplines. Responsible for ensuring the structural integrity of piping systems and their compliance with applicable codes, standards, and industry practice. Supports estimating at each project phase through various means. Provides leadership and guidance to less experienced staff. Coordinates workload with piping engineering manager for developing project budgets and managing resources. Exercises cost and schedule control over piping engineering-related areas of the project. Reviews and monitors designs and specifications produced internally or externally for conformance to control estimates, codes and regulations and project specifications. Supervises, coordinates, provides leadership to and reviews work of assigned staff. Evaluates and recommends changes in methods and procedures. Visits job sites, subcontractor's offices and vendor's shops as needed to solve construction and installation problems, interpret project requirements and approve alternatives and substitutions. Participates in the Quality Improvement Process, including improving communications within the Task Force/Department. Requirements Must be knowledgeable of and have application experience with ASME B31.3 piping design code, and familiar with ASME B31.1, 31.8, and 31.12. Must be familiar with common metallurgies used in a petrochemical environment, familiar with welding procedures and related ASME code, common corrosion mechanisms and methods of mitigation, and be thoroughly knowledgeable of pertinent API documents used for guiding design. Must be able to specify coating systems for piping including painting and insulation. Must be knowledgeable in the use of piping stress analysis software including Autopipe and Caesar II. Must be familiar with typical refinery construction methods and sequences and the effects on design. Applicant must have experience in a lead piping engineering design role, or similar capacity and responsibility as a plant support engineer or subject matter expert. Min experience in either environment is 7yrs. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from accredited program required. Registered professional engineer is desired. Must have strong communication expertise, be able to work constructively with other employee owners, and be able to lead and mentor others in the piping engineering discipline. This position mandates an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
